Praying Ephesians for Sipsey, Alabama

I hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day, and took time to remember and give thanks for those who have paid the heaviest price for the freedoms we enjoy in this country. It also makes me feel especially grateful for Jesus laying down His life. Not only because without His sacrifice we would probably never know what it’s like for anyone to give their life for ours, but also because His death purchased for us a freedom that is not dependent on politics or the will of man, but on the everlasting, unchanging promises of our Heavenly Father, and that freedom will last forever.

Located in Walker County on the Sipsey fork of the Black Warrior River

Mayor Belinda McCain

Founded in 1912 as a company town to house local minors

2010 population: 437

  • First school house built in 1854
  • In 1912 Sipsey Mines opened (under the name of Maryland Coal Co.) which was owned by the DeBardeleben family
  • Dr. Milton H. Fies, an engineer brought to Sipsey by DeBardeleben, laid out the town. He reportedly said that the most difficult task was deciding if the church the company built would serve as a Methodist or Baptist church. He finally determined that Sundays would be rotated between the two, serving as Methodist on one Sunday, and as Baptist the following Sunday.
  • Sipsey suffered direct hits from two tornadoes on April 27, 2011

I’m having a case of writer’s block or Bible block, meaning I’m having a really hard time finding a verse I believe the Lord is leading me to use to pray for this town. So I’m just going to go with one of my favorite passages that I’ve used before, Ephesians 1:18-21. It’s hard to go wrong praying out of the Bible, but even more so when praying actual prayers straight from the Bible. I’m not even going to type out the verses before-hand, because I’m going to pray them almost directly from the Bible, personalizing it as I go.

Ephesians 1:18-21 – Father, we pray for the Town of Sipsey, “that the eyes of (their) heart would be enlightened”, so that its residents, from Mayor McCain all the way to those living in poverty or who feel they have no voice or influence, “would know the hope of Your calling” on their lives and on the town itself. Please let them experience “the riches of Your inheritance in the saints”, and to know “the surpassing greatness of Your power toward us who believe”. We praise You, God, because all these things are according “to the strength of Your might which You brought about in Christ, when You raised Him from the dead and seated Him at Your right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the one to come.”

We pray that the people of Sipsey would know and trust in that strength to accomplish all that concerns them and their town. The idea of submission is not a popular one in our culture, but it’s the best possible situation for us when we are submitted to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. So we pray that You would turn the hearts of Mayor McCain and all those who help lead this town, and the heart of every citizen, and cause them to submit to Your righteous authority. Let them see abundant blessing and help from Your throne as they do so. Cause them to marvel over You and Your faithfulness to Your promises, and over Your strength and might.

We pray all these things in Your all-powerful name, Jesus, amen.

Will you tell us how you are praying for either Sipsey or your own city or town today?

Argo, AL – A Town of Two Counties

Greetings in the name of the Lord! Today we will be praying for Argo. It was difficult to find information on this town. I would really like to know where the name came from. If anyone out there knows, please share it with us.
Here is what I did find out:
. Straddles 2 counties – St. Clair and Jefferson
. Neighbor is the city of Trussville
. Population is made up of mostly married couples
. Low poverty rate
. Tornado and earthquake activity is above state average.
(Hasn’t that been said of nearly every city we’ve prayed for so far??)
. Land area is 12.2 sq. miles

Eph. 6:10 – (Amplified) “In conclusion, be strong in the Lord and be empowered through your union with Him. Draw your strength from Him, that strength which His boundless might provides.”

Lord God, You are our strength and shield; a very present help in times of trouble. You are our provider. You provide pardon for our sin; peace for our storms; and Your own presence to guide us and comfort us. May we continue to look to You in good times, bad times, and all the times in between, because You alone are strong and mighty. You alone have boundless might.

We thank You for how you have blessed the city of Argo. You have blessed them with peace and prosperity. Lord, we are like sheep, and we too easily forget that every good and perfect gift comes from Your hand. We pray that the city leaders and the people of Argo would recognize that Your hand has provided the good things they enjoy. Keep them from being deceived into thinking it was by their own hand that they have come to enjoy their prosperity, but instead cause it to draw the city of Argo closer to You. The blessing of prosperity can become a curse if it causes us to turn away from You or reject You.

May the people of Argo draw their strength from You. Unite their hearts to honor and revere Your name. Teach the leaders how to walk with You, so that they can experience Your strength and power in their lives. May the Church in Argo rise up in the power that is theirs because of their union with You. May they lift up the name of Jesus in their city, Who is their strong tower, so that the righteous may run to it and be safe.

We lift up the young families in Argo, and ask that You would protect them and uphold them with Your righteous right hand. It is so hard to raise a family and sustain a marriage in our culture today. They need the strength that comes from Your boundless might. Cause them to draw on that power that comes through a personal relationship with You. Teach husbands what it means to be strong in the Lord rather than their own strength. Teach wives how to draw from Your power as they seek to be in union with You and with their husbands.

Protect the people of Argo from the wiles of the devil, and teach them how to stand in the strength of the Lord. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

What does the Lord lay on your heart as you pray for Argo?
