Ginny, our researcher, had a hard time finding any historical information about Maytown. If any of you have any, please let us know! Ginny and I have really enjoyed learning about each town/city we have prayed for so far, and seeing how our history connects us to one another and how it can help us pray differently than we might otherwise pray.

Mayor Ann Goolsby
Because we are at the Christmas season, and our church is observing Advent this year, I can’t get Isaiah 9:2 out of my head: “The people who walk in darkness will see a great light; those who live in a dark land, the light will shine on them.” Or as Matthew 4:16 puts it, in past tense, “The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great light, and those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death, upon them a light dawned.”
This is a great verse to pray for all of our cities and towns, as well as our nation (or whatever nation is on your heart).
Lord God, You are the Father of Lights with whom there is no change and no shadow. We praise You for Your light, and for sending the Light of the World into our darkness. You have established a covenant with us through the blood of Your Son, to rescue us from the “land and shadow of death”, and to make us joint-heirs in Your Kingdom, where there is no longer any darkness. Hallelujah!!
We pray that in Maytown, this Christmas would be one of recognizing and revering the Light. We pray that the Light of salvation would shine on every person in this town. Let that light open prison doors and set those who are held captive by sin free. Let Your light bring healing and restoration where there has been loss. Let Your light bring things that have been hidden in darkness into the light so that it can be exposed and robbed of its power. Let it bring Life where there is death and despair.
Father of Lights, we pray that You would bless this town and its people with every good and perfect gift (James 1:17). Let them recognize those blessings for what they are and give You the glory for it. Where it is appropriate, we pray that You would raise up Your church in Maytown to be the conduit of those gifts and blessings. Let the Body of Christ be a light in their community.
We pray for Mayor Goolsby and the other town leaders in Maytown. May Your light be shed abroad in their hearts so that they can be lined up with Your good and perfect will. Let Your Word be a lamp unto their feet and a light unto their path. (Psalm 119:105)
We pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen!
How does the Advent/Christmas season prompt you to pray for your city?
