Mayor Scott McBrayer

Founded 1926

Incorporated in 1927 when Rosedale, Edgewood and Grove Park voted to merge and incorporate under the name of Homewood.

2010 population 25,167

  • 5 miles south of Birmingham City

  • In 2011, Homewood was ranked as the state’s “most walkable city” which was based on the ability of people to walk from their home to nearby amenities.

  • First settlers came in the early 1800’s

  • A cholera epidemic in 1873 led many people, living in Birmingham City, to look for a healthier place to live.  Speculators began developing communities in the areas surrounding the city.  Rosedale, Grove Park, Edgewood and Oak Grove (cities that would eventually become part of Homewood) experienced significant growth.

  • 1929 Homewood annexed the town of Hollywood

  • During the Great Depression, 85 percent of public schools in Alabama closed.  Following the closure of the Jefferson County Schools in 1936, funding from the city of Homewood allowed Shades Cahaba high school, Edgewood Elementary, and Rosedale Schools, to remain open for nine months a year.

Hollywood Historic District, the Rosedale Historic district, and the Rosedale Park Historic District are all listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Psalm 90:14-17 – “O satisfy us in the morning with Your lovingkindness, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. Make us glad according to the days You have afflicted us, and the years we have seen evil. Let Your work appear to Your servants and Your majesty to their children. Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us; and confirm for us the work of our hands; yes, confirm the work of our hands.”

Lord God, we seek You because You are worthy to be sought, and because we are desperately dependent on You. We thank You that Your mercies are new every morning, because we would be without hope otherwise. Thank You for Your faithfulness to all generations.

We pray for the city of Homewood today, Father, that You would satisfy this city and its residents with Your lovingkindness. May Your covenant love and mercy give them the joy of the Lord even in the face of trials and heartache. May the strength of Homewood be in the joy of the Lord, and not in their past or their current culture, even though both those things are rich.

Father, would You give great grace and favor to Mayor McBrayer and all those who help lead Homewood? Cause them to look for Your guidance and direction, for Your leadership. Let them see how You are working in their city, and know how to join You in that work. May the work that they accomplish in and for their city, their families and their lives be established in You.

Father, we bless the City of Homewood in Your gracious name. Protect and deliver them from the evil one. Tear down strongholds of unrighteousness for Your name’s sake. May the residents of this city and their children see Your majesty.

Many of us are very familiar with Homewood. How is the Lord prompting you to pray for them? Even if you don’t live in Homewood, I believe the Lord blesses our investment of prayer for other cities and communities by commanding a blessing on those things which concern us.
