Today is Election Day. What a tremendous privilege and responsibility we have to select our leaders! As we vote today, we should be mindful of an even greater privilege and responsibility to pray for those who lead us and hold political office. I Timothy 2:1-4 says, “First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” So let’s pray together now.
Heavenly Father, You are our God and Savior. Isaiah 46:9, 10 tells us that You are God and there is no other. There is no one like You. In Your Sovereignty, You declare the end from the beginning. Your purpose will be established and You will accomplish Your good pleasure. So we praise You, Lord God, for Your Sovereign grace over us.
It is by Your hand that leaders are established and removed, and yet You’ve given us the incredible privilege of joining You in that work through political elections. Forgive us for taking it too lightly or for thinking that it by our own will and power that anyone is established in leadership. Cause our perspective to be lined up rightly with Yours. And first of all – most of all – cause us to be faithful to pray for those in authority over us. Cause us to pray rightly: humbly, graciously and according to Your Word. Forgive us for declaring our own opinions and calling it prayer. Forgive us for sitting in pride and judgment over those we disagree with politically. Not that it’s wrong to take a stand, but we choose to stand on opinion and ideas instead of on the Word of God. Thank You, Lord, for Your forgiveness.
So we lift up our leaders today to You today, Lord – for the ones who are currently in office as well as the ones You have ordained to be elected to day. We pray Isaiah 11:2-4 for them, that the Spirit of the LORD would rest on them, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and strength, the spirit of knowledge and fear of the LORD. We pray that each man and woman in leadership would delight in the fear of You, to not judge by what their eyes see or make a decision on what they hear. Cause them to rule in righteousness and justice. For Your honor and glory, for Your name’s sake we pray these things.
Remember to go vote today, and remember to pray every day for those we’ve selected. What Scripture does the Lord lead you to when you pray for our political leaders?
