. Town built around Brookside mine which was opened in 1886
. Name stems from Five Mile Creek, which runs through the town
. Town was incorporated in 1898
. Settled by predominantly Eastern European immigrants
. Mine was shut down during the 1920 Alabama coal strike and never re-opened.
. In 2003, a violent storm caused Five Mile Creek to flood, completely destroying downtown Brookside.
. Today, the town is re-inventing itself as a recreation destination around the natural attractions of the creek and its mining history. In other words, using the very things that almost destroyed them.
. St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church hosts an annual Food Festival this first full weekend of November. www.stnicholasbrookside.org
Jeremiah 17:8 – For he will be like a tree planted by the water, that extends its roots by a stream and will not fear when the heat comes; but its leaves will be green, and it will not be anxious in a year of drought nor cease to yield fruit.
Heavenly Father, You are the Living Water. You alone can satisfy our thirsty souls. You are also our anchor and strong tower, so that when the rains come and the waters rise, they cannot overwhelm us. Thank You for Your provision and peace even in the face of great need. You are faithful God.
We also thank You for the spirit of fortitude you have given this town to rebuild and reinvent themselves after the flood in 2003. We pray that You would bless those efforts in such a way that they clearly recognize it is Your hand of blessing on their town. Please grant them provision and bring increase to this town for Your glory.
We pray that Your Church in Brookside would so full of love that nothing could overcome it (Song of Solomon 6:8). Raise up the intercessors to pray for their town, and let them see Your hand of mercy, grace, and love move in result of those prayers. Cause the Church to be a place of rescue, refuge, and restoration for that town and the surrounding communities.
We lift up Mayor McCondiche, the town council and all those who help lead the city. Turn the eyes of their hearts to see Jesus. Give them wisdom and the resources to accomplish all that You have in store for Brookside. Let Your Kingdom come to Brookside and let Your will be done there as it already is in Heaven. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
How is the Lord prompting you to pray?
